Political Synthesis Nepali Style
Mainstreaming Maoists
Some people think the Maoists could have saved the rest of us a whole lot of time and effort, not to say blood, if they had just picked up Madan Bhandari's book on Bahudaliya Janabad in the early 1990s. They are missing the point.
I don't know what exactly Madan Bhandari's Bahudaliya Janabad is, but it sure did not make the UML want a constituent assembly or end the monarchy.
I am not even thinking that the Maoists in Nepal will become like the CPI(M) in India, although that would be a great second choice.
Not Like The Seven Parties
I am not suggesting the Maoists should become like the seven parties.
I think the Nepali Congress has been so insistent on the Maoists giving up their arms because they think the Maoists are trying to become just another political party.
April Revolution
The seven parties did not see it coming, the Maoists did not see it coming. The seven parties had put forth a four day program. The Maoists had extended moral support to the same. Although as things built up, there was a rush to take credit.
There was this amazing degree of spontaneity to the whole thing. The scale of it was magical. It spread across the country like wildfire.
The magic that it was, the April Revolution has not yet attained its greatness. It has still not qualified itself to join the ranks of the big revolutions of world history, namely the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the October Revolution, the Indian Struggle For Independence.

Nepal As A Cutting Edge Democracy
Something New Has To Emerge
I call it the European colonization hangover. The Nepali politicos are limited by what Karl Marx did or did not say, about what got written down in the British Magna Carta, or not.
I have been eager to draw in someone like Dr. Baburam Bhattarai into a debate on my Proposed Constitution.

Business Ideas
What are some of the business ideas that the Nepali diaspora in New York City could be looking into?
I think not having voting rights in the city, not having political equality is the biggest impediment. So the need for a civil rights movement to attain political equality has to be considered a business need by the diaspora population. Do it for the promise of money. Give some time to the political work.
Micro Investment
Other than that, there are many ways the diaspora people can hope to launch businesses.
Invest In Businesses In Nepal
This can be your family business. You could buy stocks. You could collaborate to launch something.
Franchise, Fast Food
Subway, Taco Bell, McDonald's, all these offer pretty good franchise opportunities. As long as you can manage, bank loans can help in the funding part.
Retailing
Be it a paan pasal, kirana ko dokan, it all works, small or big. 7/11.
Lawyers, Doctors
There are some Nepalis who own law firms in the city, and seem to be doing well.
Real Estate
Quite a few Nepalis have ventured into this field, some with more success than others.
Network Marketing
You can launch this with a really small investment in terms of money. But you do have to put in the time and the effort to make up for the money. I think it is a good business but it is not for everybody. A lot of people give up early.
Medical Tourism
If you can arrange to fly patients to a place like Kathmandu for medical procedures and fly them back, and do it all much cheaper than in the US, that is a huge market right there. This would not apply to all kinds of patients. And you could team up with health care providers at this end, and those at the other end, and be the "middleman."
Retirement Industry
If it could be arranged, I think a lot of Americans in the middle and lower income brackets would prefer to go live abroad for their final decades. They could live rich and fancy finally. This is also a lot of "middleman" type of work.
Investment Firm
You would gather money from a bunch of micro investors at this end and invest in businesses at the other end. You could launch micro credit firms at the other end.
Outsourcing
Many things can be outsourced. Accounting sevices, software work. You name it. This is a paradigm shift you are talking about. Make the best of both worlds. Your having grown up in a poor country comes in handy.
Venture Capital Territory
Start a technology company. Or two or three.

Federal Republic Guaranteed
The Maoists are for a federal republic. The UML is for a federal republic. The Deuba Congress is for a federal republic. The Jana Morcha is for a federal republic. The Sadbhavana is.
The Koirala Congress is not against federalism. And that party's last convention broke away from the idea of a constitutional monarchy, although its party president went on record recently saying he is still for a ceremonial monarchy. But then the senior Koirala might only be trying to smoothen the transition. He is talking of keeping the monarchy today.
Do the math. The support for a federal republic is not unanimous yet, but it is overwhelming. And if you agree to the basic democratic axiom that only another party convention of the Nepali Congress can reverse what that party decided at its last convention, then the support for a republic is unanimous.
But I am okay with the idea that a referendum will finally take the decision. That is not my first choice. My first choice would be to end the monarchy through a unanimous political decision of the eight parties.
Ending the monarchy was the street slogan of the April Revolution. How can you not see that?
I have enormous respects for Girija Koirala. He is the only Nepali who has played an important role in every single democracy movement in Nepal's history. But then his failing health is not his fault. His old age is not his fault. And because he holds a position of power, I am going to stay critical of his ways, especially those that are not democratic. There is an utter lack of democracy inside the Nepali Congress.
If I were an advisor to the king, I would suggest he abdicate and cut a deal in the process. How can you not see the monarchy will end? And if end it will, why not get yourself a safe landing when you still have a chance? For the good of your family, for the good of your country?
The King Should Abdicate
The good thing about a federal republic getting guaranteed will be that the country will be able to focus on other more important issues. For example, what shape should that federalism take? Should the country have an army? What size? What composition?
Arms Management: Break It Down Into Smaller Pieces
If all eight parties can agree on the common slogan of a federal republic, another reason that is good news is that then they will become more likely to also agree on the details of arms management. Agreeing on something takes political work. If you will be capable of it once, you will be capable of it again.
