Bid on to turn Valley into Newar republic: Yami A central committee member of the CPN-Maoist, Hisila Yami, said today the party is making “special efforts to turn the Kathmandu Valley into a Newar Autonomous Republic”. “We are here to ensure that the valley turns into a Newar Autonomous Republic shortly,” she said while addressing the Newar Ganatantrik Swaniga Abhiyan, a campaign launched with the objective of turning the valley into a republic. .... Dramatic rise in divorce cases The Mahottari District Land Revenue Office and Mahottari district court have been witnessing a steep rise in the number of people, who want divorces and ownership of parts of their land transferred to their kin. The rise has been attributed to the possibility of government imposing a ceiling on land holdings.Cases of property partition settlement and divorce have increased significantly in Mahottari. The office settles over 100 property transfer cases every day. “More and more people have been opting for divorce not because of rows, but because they want to split land and evade land ceiling,” says advocate Narayan Prasad Adhikari.

Indigenous people want republic While World Indigenous Day was being marked around the globe Wednesday, the indigenous people of Nepal have agreed on a democratic republic for bringing about reform in the country. Thousands of indigenous people from around the country gathered in Kathmandu, took out a cultural possession along city thoroughfares and chanted the slogan "Democratic Republic, Election for Constituent Assembly and State Reforms, the desire of indigenous people." ..... The declaration has demanded a proportional electoral system for the CA. .... It has also demanded 50 per cent women's representation at all levels of the state. ..... Speaking at the program Amik Sherchan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health, said that the government should declare August 9 a national day....... Suresh Ale Magar, central member of CPN-Maoist .... they would never accept a power center like the king, "which never acknowledged the identity of the indigenous people". They said that those advocating the relevance of monarchy would be washed away along with the monarchy. .......
