Yes. Absolutely.
Girija Koirala is the undisputed Commander of this movement. Noone in this revolution has Girija Koirala's stature. Although he is in his 80s, he could still be president. He has been home all since April 6 when the revolution took off. But he has been the biggest presence out in the streets, even in his absence.
But for that to happen, he has to rally the seven party alliance around a two word slogan: Democratic Republic.
That is the number one precondition. Unless you are a republican, how can you be president? Unless you climb down into the water, how can you swim? Unless you don the space suit, how could you fly out into space?
Before its vertical split, the Nepali Congress was the largest party in Nepal. Himal Survey shows where the parties stand today. (

८%Girija Koirala is the only person who could lead the Deuba Congress into a respectful integration at all levels. Does he have the will? If he can not do that, his is not the largest party in Nepal, and democratic arithmetic says the leadership position of the interim democratic government has to go to Madhav Nepal. I am not biased against Girija. I am just doing my math.
Even if Girija were to be president, Madhav Nepal would be the Vice President. Nepal could do most of the legwork in the administration and help neutralize Girija's age issue. So age is only a small barrier. The big barrier is Girija so far has not rallied the seven party alliance around the simple, clear slogan of a Democratic Republic.
Whoever becomes the interim president will be the first president of Nepal. That is historic. That is like being George Washington. That is like being Rajendra Prasad and Nehru two in one.
We have offered a constituent assembly as the only meeting ground between us and the king. But we also have to have a plan B. What if the king does not come around to it? How long will we keep getting people out in the streets? How many martyrs is the political leadership asking for? How many more? We already have 15. Plan B is a roadmap to the constituent assembly that has no role in it for the king. And that would be
Interim Constitution, Revolutionary Parliament.
We often make the mistake of thinking the king is a democrat, that he thinks like us. He is not a democrat, he is a feudal. He does not think like us. He does not think the language of political dialogue, and political compromise. Those are our territory.
Everything on his part shows we have to become a republic first precisely because we want to go to a constituent assembly.
A revolutionary parliament might or might not turn the country into a republic immediately. A revolutionary parliament might still decide to keep the king around and decide his fate through a constituent assembly. On the other hand the revolutionary parliament might send him to jail for life, might confiscate all his illegally amassed property.
A revolution stands in a category of its own. A revolution is not a movement. A revolution is no hartal.
My question to the SPA leaders is, can you recognize a revolution when you see one?
